The Certificate of Practice (CoP) is an official authorisation issued by a State Bar Council to an advocate who has qualified the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). It is the legal document that permits an enrolled advocate to appear in courts, tribunals, and other legal authorities in India.
Legal basis: Section 1(1) of the Bar Council of India Certificate and Place of Practice (Verification) Rules, 2015, read with the Advocates Act, 1961, makes qualifying AIBE and obtaining CoP mandatory for every advocate who wishes to practise law.
The Bar Council of India introduced AIBE and the CoP requirement to ensure a minimum standard of legal competence among practising advocates. The legal system's integrity depends on advocates having a baseline understanding of procedural and substantive law.
Ensures competence
Guarantees every practising advocate has demonstrated minimum legal knowledge.
Protects clients
Safeguards litigants from being represented by advocates without basic legal understanding.
Regulatory compliance
Mandated by BCI under the Advocates Act — non-compliance is a professional misconduct.
Bridges education gap
Addresses the gap between law school theory and practical legal knowledge required in court.
After qualifying AIBE, follow these steps to obtain your Certificate of Practice:
Check the AIBE result
Visit the official AIBE portal and verify your result using your roll number. Download and save your scorecard.
Receive notification from BCI
The Bar Council of India typically sends a communication to qualified candidates regarding the CoP issuance process. Monitor your registered email and the official portal.
Apply to your State Bar Council
Submit the CoP application to the State Bar Council with which you are enrolled. The process may vary slightly by state — contact your State Bar Council for the exact procedure.
Submit required documents
Documents typically include: AIBE scorecard / result certificate, enrollment certificate, identity proof, recent passport-size photograph, and any state-specific forms.
Pay the prescribed fee
A nominal fee may be charged by the State Bar Council for issuing the CoP. Fee amounts vary by state.
Receive your CoP
After verification, the State Bar Council issues the Certificate of Practice. You are now authorised to practise law in India.
Lifetime Validity
The Certificate of Practice, once issued, is valid for the advocate's lifetime. There is no expiry date and no renewal process required for the CoP itself.
⚠️ Important distinction
While the CoP itself has lifetime validity, your State Bar Council enrollment must remain active and in good standing. If enrollment is suspended or cancelled, the CoP loses its effect. Always ensure your enrollment fees and renewal requirements with your State Bar Council are up to date.Practising law without a valid Certificate of Practice is a serious professional and legal matter:
Professional misconduct
Under the Bar Council of India Rules, practising without a CoP constitutes professional misconduct. The advocate may face disciplinary proceedings before the State Bar Council or the BCI.
Suspension or removal from rolls
In serious cases, disciplinary action can lead to suspension of enrollment or removal from the State Bar Council rolls — effectively ending the advocate's legal career.
Adverse impact on client cases
Appearances made without valid authorisation may be challenged and set aside, causing significant harm to clients whose matters depend on such appearances.
BCI enforcement
The Bar Council of India has from time to time conducted verification drives to identify advocates practising without CoP. Courts have also been asked to ensure only CoP-holding advocates appear before them.
