Olga Tellis & Ors. v. Bombay Municipal Corporation & Ors.
- Decided
- 10 July 1985
- Bench
- Five judges, Chandrachud CJ presiding
- Citation
- (1985) 3 SCC 545
The sweep of the right to life conferred by Article 21 is wide and far reaching. It does not mean merely that life cannot be extinguished or taken away as, for example, by the imposition and execution of the death sentence, except according to procedure established by law. That is but one aspect of the right to life. An equally important facet of that right is the right to livelihood because, no person can live without the means of living, that is, the means of livelihood.

Frequently asked questions
What is in the AIBE library?⌄
Three shelves: every bare Act the AIBE syllabus prescribes, with BNS, BNSS and BSA beside the IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act; 21 Master Notes books with a mind map in every chapter; and 140+ landmark Supreme Court judgements in full text.
What are the Master Notes?⌄
Advanced, exclusive study notes in 21 books and 186 chapters, written to judiciary-exam depth. Every chapter has a mind map, memory hooks, landmark case boxes and exam nuggets, and every book ends with a rapid-revision chapter for the last 48 hours. They come with the Platinum plan; the first chapter of every book is free to read.
Are the case laws full judgements or summaries?⌄
Full judgements: the complete text as the Supreme Court delivered it, not headnotes. The library holds 140+ landmark cases, including Kesavananda Bharati, Indra Sawhney, Vishaka and D.K. Basu. When a practice question turns on a case, its judgement opens beside the question.
Is the bare-act library kept up to date?⌄
Yes. When the law changes, as when the BNS, BNSS and BSA replaced the IPC, CrPC and Indian Evidence Act, the library is updated, and both versions stay side by side until the BCI retires the older statutes. You never buy a new edition.
Can I take the library into the AIBE exam hall?⌄
No. The AIBE is open-book for clean, unmarked physical bare Acts only; notes, commentaries, printouts and phones are not allowed. Use the library to prepare, so that on exam day you know where to turn in your own bare Acts.
Can I try it for free?⌄
Yes. Every bare Act and every judgement is free to read once you sign up, and so is the first chapter of every Master Notes book. The Platinum plan unlocks all 21 books.
How much does premium cost?⌄
Plans start at ₹499 as a one-time payment, with access until the exam date; there is no subscription. The Master Notes come with the Platinum plan. Current prices are always on the Pricing page.
